Hormones During Menopause

The two main reproductive hormones in a woman’s body are estrogen and progesterone. During menopause the levels of these hormones drop drastically are responsible to the symptoms of menopause.

The main and biggest hormone that plays a role during menopause is estrogen. This hormone is vital to many body functions other than reproduction. The body needs estrogen to prevent heart disease and osteoporosis. Many doctors are quick to start synthetic replacement, but there are many sources of plant based estrogens that have the same effect.

The second hormone is progesterone and also has many vital functions in the body. This hormone drops during menopause and completely after a hysterectomy. It helps to balance estrogen and prevent estrogen dominance. It also converts to a form of testosterone which helps to give women a source of energy and sex drive. There are also plant based forms of progesterone that can be just as effective as synthetic without side effects or risks.
